Modification of Child Support Orders
Unless the parties have opted not to use the Friend of the Court's services, their office will assist in changing support orders.
In Michigan, the Court retains authority over the support order for the minor children until a child reaches the age of eighteen (18), or until the child graduates from high school, but no later than the child reaching the age of nineteen and a half (19 1/2) years of age.
If a period of at least thirty-six (36) months have passed since a party has requested a review of the existing child support, a party can submit a written request to the Friend of the Court to conduct a review.
(MCL 552.517)
The Friend of the Court's Office may prepare a written legal agreement (called a stipulation or consent order) for a change in support, to be signed by both parents and submitted to the Friend of the Court's Office. Support may be changed if the parents agree or if a motion is filed and the Court agrees that a change is appropriate. Policy for particular Friend of the Court Offices may vary, so the local Office should be contacted.
