Domestic Violence and Personal Protection Orders (PPOs)

A party who is the subject of domestic abuse can petition the court for a personal protection order to obtain protection from further abuse, including stalking. There are personal protection orders for domestic relationships (which include dating) and personal protection orders for nondomestic relationship stalking (which is available to restrain anyone else who is engaged in stalking.

A PPO is effective as soon as a judge signs it, even before the party being restrained is served. The PPO is also immediately entered on the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN).

Following is a list of the types of acts a domestic relationship PPO can prohibit:

  • entering a premises
  • assaulting, attacking, beating, molesting, or wounding a named individual
  • removing minor children from a spouse having legal custody of the children, in violation of custody and parenting time orders
  • threatening to kill or physically harm an individual
  • purchasing or possessing a firearm
  • interfering with the petitioner's efforts to remove children or property from a place solely owned or leased by the restrained individual
  • interfering with petitioner's employment or education
  • gaining access to information about the petitioner that may be contained in records concerning a minor child (school records)
  • stalking
  • any other specific act or conduct that imposes on or interferes with personal liberty or that causes reasonable fear of violence
